Rethymno- Moni Arkadi – Kournas Lake

This excursion invites you to visit and explore the area of Rethymno. We will start from the town of Rethymnon which still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, small Venetian harbor and narrow streets. We will then visit the famous Arkadi Monastery a 5th century holy site which is one of Crete’s most venerated symbols of freedom. The defiant defence of this fortress-like monastery during the 1866 Cretan rebellion against the Turks is still legendary and inspirational.

The Monastery is surrounded by a defensive precinct with two main entrances. There are also two storey guest houses, a refectory, store houses, a cellar, a cook house and an oven. Our next stop is the Lake of Kournas. An ideal location for coffee, drink or delicious food in an environment that truly opens the appetite. Kourna’s Lake is the only lake with fresh water in Crete. It is situated in a magnificent location, surrounded by high mountains and olive groves.. The relaxing and beautiful landscape is ideal for nature lovers.
